Australia Launches BetStop Nationwide Self-Exclusion Registry for Online Gambling

Australias fresh nationwide digital gaming self-ban directory, christened BetStop, is primed for rollout in the approaching months. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), tasked with overseeing online wagering within the nation, unveiled the moniker and disseminated industry protocols for the registry.

These protocols stipulate that all accredited interactive betting facilitators in Australia must publicize BetStop across their web platforms, applications, and any promotional content. They also delineate how these providers should pinpoint patrons who have enrolled with BetStop, obligating them to cease offering gaming services and shutter the accounts of anyone listed.

BetStop will empower Australians to register for exclusion from all licensed online and telephonic betting services for durations spanning three months to a lifetime.

ACMA chief Nerida O’Loughlin underscored that “BetStop will enable individuals confronting gambling risks to exert greater autonomy over their circumstances, by gaining the ability to effortlessly self-exclude from all accredited interactive wagering services through a unified procedure.” She appended that the time is ripe for the sector to ready its systems to integrate BetStop and safeguard its clientele.

The Australian Media and Communications Authority (ACMA) suggests that customers contact gaming providers directly to self-ban until a nationwide self-exclusion list is operational. This follows the ACMA’s shutdown of thepokies.net, one of Australia’s largest unlawful wagering websites, which is thought to have processed millions of dollars in wagers. The ACMA ordered Australian internet providers to restrict access to the site last month.
