The celebrated Bunbury Cup at Ascot Racecourse is set to become a significant charitable drive, benefiting organizations throughout the United Kingdom. Irrespective of the victor in this esteemed competition, the wagering sector, represented by the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC), has committed to contributing all proceeds from the race to a diverse range of deserving beneficiaries.
This act of philanthropy extends a practice established in preceding years, with prominent UK bookmakers such as Flutter (parent company to well-known brands like Paddy Power, Betfair, and Sky Bet), bet365, Entain (which encompasses Ladbrokes and Coral), and numerous others taking part.
BGC Chief Executive, Michael Dugher, highlighted the event’s importance, remarking, “Royal Ascot occupies a unique position both within the UK and internationally, and it’s genuinely heartening to witness its contribution to such a multitude of vital charities.” He continued, “Our members are honored to commemorate the King’s Coronation by once more donating all profits generated from the Bunbury Cup.”
This year’s contribution also serves as a fitting homage to the late Queen Elizabeth II, a devoted enthusiast of equestrian sport throughout her lifetime.
In the previous year alone, this endeavor amassed an impressive £1.2 million (approximately $1.5 million), and since its commencement in 2019, it has yielded over £5.5 million for a variety of charitable causes.
Following taxation, any earnings generated from wagers, regardless of a substantial victory or a modest placement, will be allocated to philanthropic endeavors. Should the bookmakers experience a deficit, they have pledged a collective donation of £250,000. This year’s beneficiaries encompass organizations advancing Holocaust awareness, combating cystic fibrosis, a collective of former Special Forces personnel, a charity endorsed by Ascot Racecourse, a children’s foundation advocated by the Princess of Wales, and an entity aiding athletes. Beyond the equestrian contests, an additional noteworthy event is taking place: Incentive Games has collaborated with bet365 to develop a complimentary horse racing game exclusively for Royal Ascot!
