Chilean Casinos See Strong Rebound in August

Chilean gaming venues experienced a significant resurgence in August, marking the first complete month of operation since February 2020.

The Chilean gaming oversight body, the Superintendence of Casinos of Games (SCJ), reported that the industry contributed 13.24 billion Chilean pesos (approximately 11.8 million pounds/13.8 million euros/16 million dollars) in taxes during August.

Chilean casinos saw a strong rebound in August, the first full month of operation since February 2020.
Gross gaming revenue (GGR) in August reached 40.8 billion Chilean pesos.

The regulatory body noted that the industry’s income surged this month as 25 of Chile’s 26 casinos operated without interruption throughout August, the first time since the onset of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic in March 2020.

The only casino that remains closed is the Casino Municipal de Natales.

Of these contributions, those from casinos operating under Chile’s Casino Law No. 19,995 amounted to 6.08 billion Chilean pesos. The value-added tax on gambling was 5.73 billion Chilean pesos, and income tax was 1.38 billion Chilean pesos.

Regional and local governments will receive the necessary gambling taxes in October.

The Sun Monticello Casino contributed the most, paying 797.8 million Chilean pesos in taxes to its regional government, as well as the same amount in municipal taxes.

Viña del Mar enjoyed a contribution of 324.2 million Chilean pesos to its regional government, as well as the same amount in municipal taxes.

In the meantime, Marina del Sol Talcahuano secured the third position with a revenue of 302.1 million Chilean pesos, contributing taxes to both its regional administration and local municipality.
