Vietnamese law enforcement officials have apprehended three individuals suspected of participating in an illicit sports wagering operation valued at 9 billion Vietnamese dong (roughly 37 million euros/39.5 million dollars).
As reported by Vietnam Express, authorities stated that Tran The Hung, Le Hong Chung, and Ngo Minh An were managing the most extensive illegal betting ring within the country’s Nghe An province, which has now been dismantled by officials.
The trio are accused of accepting wagers on football matches as early as 2014, well before the nation legalized specific forms of sports betting earlier this year.
The group is thought to have processed over 39,000 illicit sports bets over a three-year period, with the largest wager reaching 7 million Vietnamese dong, significantly surpassing the maximum bet limit established by the government following the legalization of betting on international football matches.
“These unlawful bets were placed on international matches or football leagues in England, France, and Germany,” remarked Colonel Nguyen Xuan Thiem, head of the Nghe An Provincial Financial Crime Department.
Vietnam is permitting land-based casinos to undergo a test period.
